Crawley Track Marathon & Taunton Marathon - 4th & 5th April

Another back to back marathon weekend for Steve Edward as part of the 10 marathons in 10 days training which went far better than he would have imagined.

Crawley involved running just under 106 laps of the track at the K2 centre, a fantastic venue, where they filmed the last series of Superstars. This was a fascinating event as one knows exactly where everybody is and how far behind/ahead you are.

Having gone through halfway in 1:36 and in 3rd position (out of 20 starters), Steve was just over 2 laps (about half a mile) behind the 2 front runners but he could see that one of them was slowing, so he increased the pace in the second half to gradually move into 2nd place by lap 65, (about 16 miles).

Then with 25 laps to go (about 10k), Steve decided to pick up the pace still further to try and whittle away the 2 lap gap to 1st place. It worked, with 3 laps to go he moved onto the shoulder of the guy in 1st place, waited for half a lap, then made the move and sprinted the remaining 1000m feeling like Bekele to record a finish time of 3:04:43, a 2nd half negative split of just under 1:29 and 1st place!

Steve Edwards wins Crawley Marathon

It would be expected that this fantastic effort would diminish his efforts in the Taunton Marathon the next day. This was not the case, as he pulled out another increase of pace in the second half of 5 minutes, achieving another amazing time of 3:05:30 in 22nd place overall and 3rd V45.

Chedworth Roman Trail 10 Mile Multi Terrain - 5th April

The Chedworth Roman Trail 10 Mile Multi Terrain course conditions were in complete contrast to last year's race. Run in snow in 2008, the ground this year was dry and hard accompanied with a mild temperature, although of course no lessening of the hills and river crossing!

Alistair Lockey finished first for the Bourton men in third place overall and first MV40 with a fast time of 58:49. Mike Smith showed he is returning to fitness, finishing 6th overall in 1:02:12 and 2nd MV40. Ewen Smith had a very strong run in 28th place and 1:07:16, followed by Andy Chapple 32nd in 1:08:03.

Steph Lane, 2nd lady, knocked 7 minutes off her time of last year to lead the winning ladies team home in 1:05:52. Returning to racing, Sarah Harper, showed she still has the speed for 1:14:57 and 1st LV40 and completing the team was Ali Lane 1:18:49.

Norm Lane and Chris Bence, having almost completed their marathon training for Boston on 20th April, proved their fitness by knocking 6 and 7 minutes respectively off their last year's times for 1:20:16 and a personal best of 1:26:45. Good runs were also achieved by Simon Rutherford 1:36:14, Bert Jess 1:39:22 and Jan Short 1:40:18.

Blackpool Marathon - 5th April

Rachel Griffin and Calum Forsyth travelled up north to the Blackpool Marathon - Rachel's second and Calum's third. Running together, Rachel knocked 22 minutes off her last year's time in London for 4:08.

Wright Hassall 10K - 5th April

Lynn Hudson opted for a closer to home sharpener in the Wright Hassall 10K at Leamington in a time of 49:05; not bad after a 20 mile run 2 days before!
