Gloucestershire Cross Country League - Round 3
Blackbridge, Gloucester. - Saturday 12th December 2015.

The third round of the Gloucestershire Cross Country League took place at Blackbridge in Gloucester on Saturday 12th December 2015. The course is relatively flat with a few inclines but on such a windy day and with being quite open, the conditions  made the course,  very demanding on the day.

Again Bourton Roadrunners turned up in numbers with thirty runners taking part and again recording excellent results against the bigger clubs such as Cheltenham and Gloucester and other clubs outside Gloucestershire.

The U11 course was a little longer than usual at approximately 2.2km comprising of two laps but the runners all ran extremely well.
In the girls race Maria Watkins is certainly gaining experience  with every race, pacing perfectly for 18th place. Annabella Williams was 2nd runner home in an excellent 20th place. She set of a little too quick and did suffer a little towards the end of the race, but is extremely young and once she gains more experience will certainly be a runner to watch in the future. Abigail Barnett 31st  was our third runner home and similar to Annabella is still extremely young but ran at a more even pace and as she gets older and gains experience, is another star in the making.  The girls were well supported by Isabel Dennett (33rd), Celia Darwent (35th) and Nell Ash (37th). On the day the team managed 5th and 10th but as these young runners gain more experience, are sure they will be rewarded with a top three position in the future.

The U11 boys did extremely well on the day with a 2nd, 8th and 10th team position on the day. Beau Griffin led the boys home in 5th place with another excellent run. With another year in the U11’s he is certainly going to be a top three contender for next season. Beau’s brother Alfie did feel a little in his brother’s shadow but recently has rekindled his joy in running and this showed today with one of his best performances to date, with an excellent 12th place and 2nd runner home. I am sure that if this continues, he is certainly going to move much further up the field. No member works harder and races more than Christopher Hunt who  was rewarded with one of his best finishing positions to date in 13th place (Not unlucky for him) and third runner home. With three teams finishing on the day, these athletes were extremely well supported. Lysander Tarrant who has massive potential ran extremely well on the day for 16th. They were well supported by Sean Farley (32nd), Peter Fletcher 35th, Arthur Fletcher 38th, Edward Jones 39th and Acer Tarrant 45th. Several of these runners are still under nine years of age, impressive.

The U13’s started the day in 2nd place overall and again they did not disappoint. Isabel kiey-Thomas is again showing her class  with a well paced run for one of her best finishing positions to date in 4th. Lauren Farley also ran an excellent race for 8th despite aggravating a previous injury and feeling that she let the team down. Not sure why, as this was one of her best finishing positions and all the leaders thought she ran extremely well. Helena West who is one of our veteran runner’s even at such a young age, ran strongly as she always does for 15th.  Annabella Tallis was our final runner home and although she set off a little to quick and suffered a little at the end of the race showed gutsy determination to finish in 20th. The girls ended up second on the day and second overall with just one race to come.

The U13 boys team have all moved up from the U11’s the year before or consist of new runners to the club and they all showed quality and class on the day, starting 4th team place on the day and managing a 2nd place on the day which could move them up a place. Kan Ikeda led the team home in 6th place followed by Louis Mutsaars in 13th and Jago Tarrant in 20th. Close behind were James Mace 22nd, Johnny Walling 23rd, Connor McGuinness-Dean 24th and Harvey Sawyer 25th.  . If these runners continue to improve and work hard we will have an extremely strong team next season.

The U15 girls started 7th team overall and managed 3rd place on the day, which should move them up a few places. Emily Field has improved massively over the year but after struggling a little at Malvern again showed her potential with her best finish to date in 10th.  Koumi Ikeda has had a very busy schedule lately and unsurprisingly has looked a little tired of late but still ran as strongly as ever for 14th. She even had a swimming competition a few hours after, certainly shows team spirit. Gabby Jones has been suffering for nearly a year with colds and viruses that have held her back massively but has never given up. She put massive effort in today and was rewarded with a well earnt 18th place, 10 places higher than her best this season.

If our runners turn up in force for the final round at Kenilworth in February, I am sure there are a number of County Medals up for grabs. If a team wins a medal, anybody who has finished top three for the club in any of the four races will win a county medal.

Gloucestershire Schools Cheltenham County Championships.
Newent - Saturday 5th December 2015.

Several of our runners made it through to the Schools County Championships at Newent. Luckily the rain held off, but was very windy. The course was undulating and with the wind was quite demanding.

Our runners all performed above expectation with excellent results. Those finishing in the top twelve will represent Gloucestershire at Cardiff in January and those in the top eight may represent Gloucestershire in the South West Finals at Pitville in February.

Minor Girls - Lauren Farley 3rd. Minor Boys - Louis Mutsaars 10th.

Junior Girls - Isobel Kiey-Thomas 4th. Lucy Griffin 8th and Emily Field 15th.

Inter Girls - Rosie Mutsaars 11th.

Very impressive results.

Other News for November 2015.

Christopher Hunt took part in the Raceways 5K at Long Marston for the 3rd time. His previous times were: 23:09 and 22:38. Christopher was determined to get under 22 mins despite the poor weather conditions, he felt like he was running underwater down the final long straight, but through sheer determination managed 21:51 (mile splits were 6:35, 6:57;7:15). He was the only BRR Junior but as this was one of the races the senior club had in its 6 from 10 competition there were members from the seniors running. Very impresive that he was 5th BRR home out of 13.

Several of our juniors took part in an annual Cross Country Race hosted by Chipping Campden School for the local Primary Schools. Christopher Hunt was 5th in the year 5/6 boys race, helping to bring his school home in first place. Bella Righton also took part and was in 2nd place until she fell, but got up and fought back strongly, eventually finishing in 5th.

Gloucestershire Schools Cheltenham District Championships.
St Edwards School. Charlton Kings - Friday 13th November 2015.

The Gloucestershire Schools District Cross Country Champs took part again at St Edwards School in Charlton Kings. This is a well known location for this event with a long steep hill, to tackle at least once, depending on age groups. Although difficult it is a very good course, that certainly tests all who run.

Again we had a number of runners from the club taking part, but on this occasion for their schools, including the Cotswold and Chipping Campden Schools.

In the Minor Girls, Lauren Farley after a long spell, fighting injury is again starting to show her class with a great run for 2nd. Ellie Edgerton ran well and was not far behind in 15th. Annie Tallis went off a little too quick at the start and suffered a little in the later stages, but still finished an excellent 20th.

In the Minor Boys Kan Ikeda again showed his class for 2nd place.  Louis Mutsaars ran a very well,  paced race, getting stronger as the race went on, overtaking many runners over the last quarter for 9th. Jago Tarrant continues to impress, also pacing the course well for 34th. Johnny Walling, one of our newer members, was close behind in 36th, and sure with regular training, has great potential. Connor McGuinness-Dean has been training hard, but unfortunately on the day, suffered badly from stitch but still did well to finish in  44th. Christian Glauber also ran very well for 58th.

Isabel Kiey-Thomas has been working extremely hard at training and was rewarded with an excellent 3rd , in the Junior Girls race. Emily Field  has come a long way in a very short time and again ran well for 8th.  Kate Edgerton also ran well for 22nd, closely followed by Josephine Mutsaars 29th, who is beginning to again show her potential. Jessica Hale always works at 100+% and again did not disappoint for a very good 36th place.

Dylan Williams was our only runner in the Junior boys and despite falling at the beginning of the race, got up and gave chase, showing great determination and eventually finishing in 5th place.

Rosie Mutsaars seems to be enjoying her running again and this shows over the recent months. Her class showed with an excellent 4th place in the Junior Girls. Koumi Ikeda was very close behind in 9th, despite twisting her ankle in the warm up, a great result. Charlotte Foster again ran strongly, as always for 16th, followed by Gabby Jones in 26th. A great result for Gabby after a long period of illness that has held her back greatly.

Tom Birch is starting to take his training more seriously and this showed in the Junior boys with a well deserved 41st place.
All our runners did extremely well with approximately 100 runners in each race and these runners coming from the top runners in each school.

The top twelve runners in each race will go through to the Gloucestershire Schools County Championships at Newent on the 5th December. The next four runners are picked as reserves.

ESAA Schools Regional Finals.
Warrington. - Saturday 7th November 2015.

With help from our junior runners, Chipping Campden School made it through to the ESSA Schools Finals at Warrington. With the recent heavy rain the course was very muddy and extremely slippy with many runners falling.

In the Junior boys Kan Ikeda was first to finish for Chipping Campden in an excellent 7th place helping the team to 9th overall.

Koumi Ikeda, Emily Field and Charlotte Foster, ran for the Junior Girls all running extremely well for 16th, 18th and 26th. Unfortunately Gabby Jones was unable to run on the day and due to the other Chipping Campden runner falling and having to retire, Chipping Campden finished with just three finishers when four are needed to score.

Chipping Campden School did extremely well to reach this stage again, against some much larger and prestigious schools.

Gloucestershire Cross Country League - Round 2
Malvern. - Saturday 31st October 2015.

Round 2 of the Gloucestershire Cross Country League took place on Malvern Common on the 31st October on a glorious sunny day. Situated at the foot of the Malvern Hills the course was very undulating with a longish climb to the finish line. This was certainly a very demanding but great cross country course.

With the venue being an hour away and also on Halloween, numbers were always going to be lower than usual, but 28 very committed juniors took part and they all did extremely well.

Gloucestershire Cross Country League - Round 1
Farm Park. - Saturday 3rd October 2015.

The first race took place in the Gloucestershire Cross Country league   at the Cotswold Farm Park on Saturday 3rd October 2015. Bourton juniors had a tremendous turn out they all ran very well, the course is very demanding with lots of ups and downs, twists and turns, very hard to get any rhythm or flow. Perfect racing conditions today.

The under 11 boys had a very strong field to contend with again. Beau Griffin led the race with 400 meters to go, a tremendous effort and with a bit more experience and stamina he will lead the whole way, he finished 3rd today just a few seconds away from victory. Once again Lysander Tarrant gave 100% in a very strong run to finish 15th today and closely followed by the fast improving George Quli in 18th. Christopher Hunt is never far away from the front of the field in a good 21st, Chris properly found this course too short for him as he has fantastic stamina and had the race been ½ mile longer he would be in the top few. Alfie Griffin was solid as ever in 27th today. There were also fine runs from Toby Sellek in 33rd, Arthur Fletcher in 38th, George Farley in 52nd, Edward Jones in 55th, Sean Farley in 58th, Peter Fletcher in 61st, Arthur Quli in 66th and Acer Tarrant in 75th. In the team event the boys are 3rd, 7th, 14thand 17th a very good performance.

In the under 13 boys race it was again a very competitive field with all of our boys moving up for the first time this year which is very hard not only up against much older boys but a longer distance to run. Kan Ikeda is coming back into good form with a fine17th today and he was pushed hard as ever by the very determined Louis Mutsaars in 23rd. Harvey Sawyer had an excellent first race for the club in 30th. James Mace also had a good battle to finish 32nd  he just held of Johnny Walling in 34th and some fine sprinting by Jago Tarrant to take 36th. Connor McGuinness-Dean had a good solid run at his first outing over the longer distance to finish well up in 41st. In the team event the boys are 8th and 11th.

Next away were the under 11 girls with a good turn out from the club .Maria Watkins and Annabella Williams pushed each other very well and in doing so both finished well up the field in fine runs in 9th and 10th and only 1 second apart. Isabel Dennett flew round today to finish 20th, also Abigail Barnett and Nell Ash had a fine battle to finish 23rd and 24th again only 1 second apart. Celia Darwent is getting stronger race by race following the family tradition of very good runners to finish 30th today. There were also fine runs today from Alice Brown in 42nd, Tilly Sellek in 47th and Eliana Hale in 54th. In the team event the girls are 2nd and 6th. A good afternoon’s work.

A very strong field lined up for the 13 girls race. Isabel Kiey – Thomas is coming into very good form again after a good summer on the track and it showed today to finish 7th,with a little more stamina she will claw her way up the field over the season. Lauren Farley is getting over a nasty injury to finish very well in 13th today and again as the season goes on she will get stronger and stronger. Helena West races so well, she always rises to the occasion and she did today to finish 17th. Good to see Isobel Barnett racing very well again today in 21st and Anne Tallis never gives up in a very determined 30th today. In the team event the girls are 4th.

The under 15 girls had a long tough course to complete today and they all battled very well in a new distance for all of them. Emily Field has improved this season beyond recognition, she has trained hard all summer and the rewards are now coming to finish a very good 14th. Koumi Ikeda has been swimming a lot over the summer so she ran extremely well today considering all the swimming to finish 18th a naturally very strong athlete. Good also to see Gaby Jones returning to racing again a very determined and gutsy runner she finished a very good 28th today. In the team event the girls are 7th.

In the under 17 girls race very good to the very talented Rosie Mutsaars back racing again to finish well up the field in 7th as her strength and stamina grows I am sure she will be battling  for top positions

Other News - September 2015.

After running the day before at Plock Court, George and Arthur Quli both took part in the Junior 3km Cirencester Park race hosted by Cirencester AC. Plock Court 2 Mile Relay & Fun Run. Gloucester.
Saturday 26th September 2015.

Terry Haines from Severn AC organises several Cross Country Races throughout the year at Plock Court and always puts races on for the juniors. We have supported these junior races for a number of years as they are quite low key and ideal for those new to running or those wanting a warm up for upcoming races, in this case the Cotswold Farm Park run in two weeks.

Numbers are usually quite low at the beginning of the Cross Country Season but again a number of BRR Juniors took part and all did extremely well.

In the Fun Run, George Quli is becoming a star runner, managed 3nd overall, not far behind two much older runners. New member, Harvey Sawyer in his 1st race showed great potential for 4th, Toby Sellek showed his class with a very good run for 5th. They were well supported by Edward Jones 7th, Arthur Fletcher 8th, Arthur Quli 8th, Isobel Dennett 9th, Arthur Quli 10th and Peter Fletcher 11th.
Several of our older runners took part in the 2 mile relay. This was  also a county race with medals up for grabs.

A team from our U15 girl’s took part in the ladies race. Charlotte Foster ran a great first leg in 12 minutes, 40 seconds. Gabby Jones did very well on the 2nd leg in 13 minutes 44 seconds and seems to be returning to full fitness after a long run of illness. Emily Field ran a great third leg in 12 minutes 11 seconds to bring the team home in 1st place and county Gold medal’s for the team.

Unfortunately we could not put out full team’s in the other events but did enter a mixed team with help from one runner from another club. Tom Birch is improving with each race he run’s with a good time of 12 minutes 24 seconds, Ewen Smith, one of our star adult runners ran the 2nd leg in 10 minutes 35 seconds. Isobel Kiey-Thomas ran the third leg in an excellent  13 minutes 14 seconds and our guest runner ran the 4th leg in 14 minutes 41 seconds.

All junior members who took part were awarded 1 point in the Race Champ Table.

St Andrews Primary School Fun Run. Chedworth.
Sunday 6th September 2015.

Chedworth Fun Run

This was only the second year that St Andrews Primary School, Chedworth, ran a Fun Run over approximately one and a half miles over an undulating cross country course, that was quite demanding, but also rewarding, with  some wonderful views, over the beautiful Cotswold countryside.

All runners received a medal, and prizes were well distributed between a wide variety of age groups, from U15’s down to U5’s, something not often seen in smaller events. Although portrayed as just a fun run it was quite competitive at the top half of the field but also fun and enjoyable to those that were not.

Bourton Road Runners again turned up in numbers with Emily Field winning her first race beating a very good male runner from Cirencester Athletics Club by 14 seconds. I am sure in the coming years, a talent to watch.

Many of the other age groups were won by our members with Arthur Quli winning the U7 Boys, Tilly Sellek, U8 Girls, Abigail Barnett, U9 Girls, Edward Jones, U9 Boys, Isabel Dennett, U10 Girls, George Quli, U10 Boys, Dicken Tilley Loughrey, U11 Boys, Lauren Farley, U12 Girls, Christian Glauber, U12 Boys & Gabby Jones, U15 Girls.

They were well supported by Peter Fletcher, 2nd U9 Boy, Maite Capper, 3rd U10 Girl, Arthur Fletcher, 2nd U10 Boys, Christopher Hunt, 2nd U11 Boys, Toby Sellek 3rd U11 Boys, Isobel Barnet, 2nd U12 Girls, Ella Davies, 3rd U12 Girl & Connor McGuiness-Dean, 2nd U13 Boy.

Overall some excellent results and all our members should be very proud of themselves.

A big thank you to Jennifer Glass and all involved for running such a well run event and hope to be back again next year.

South West Inter County Championships - 19th July 2015 - U13G 1500m

Isabel Kiey-Thomas had her first race in Gloucestershire colours at this event at Exeter Arena. Despite carrying an Achilles injury, she raced well against the top-ranked girls from the region. The field split quite quickly from the start, with the first four girls moving away strongly. Izzy settled herself into fifth position at the front of the second group. She maintained this position until the final lap, where the two girls who had trailed her to this point started to try to gain ground on her. With her usual determination and a good sprint finish, she fought them off to finish fifth in a personal best time of 5.28.79.

Other News for June & July 2015.

Cheltenham & County Harriers - First Midsummer Graded Open Meeting - 1st July 2015.

Isabel Kiey-Thomas was the only Bourton Roadrunner representing the Club at this meeting. On the hottest evening of the year so far, the meeting was well attended with many athletes coming from Welsh clubs, others from as far afield as Yeovil, Stafford and Lincoln. The races were seeded according to PBs. Isabel was seeded into the sixth 800m race, in a field of twelve athletes of mixed sexes & ages. She set off strongly and maintained fourth position for half a lap, before moving up confidently into third. On the second lap she stayed close on the shoulder of Nick Payne (U13B) for half a lap, before passing him with ease and closing down on Freya Harper (U15G) who had led the race from the gun. With a strong sprint, Isabel finished the race in 2nd place, just one second behind Freya and within a second of her own PB, in a time of 2.47.35. Over the six 800m races, she finished 3rd U13G.

Sherborne Fun Run. Sunday 21st June 2015.

The 2015 Sherborne Fun Run took place again this year on 21st June, and once again Bourton Juniors turned out in force to support the event, held from and in aid of the local school. The course is far from easy the first half of the race is up a steep climb into the woods with lots of twist and turns. The conditions were perfect. There was also a big field so some tough completion for Bourton.

After many years of trying Dylan Williams won the whole race in great style looking so easy and relaxed over the challenging terrain he won well in 9mins 44secs.

In the Under 11 Boys race Bourton dominated the top positions with a fine run from Chris Hunt in 10mins 50secs to take the top spot and to show why he is the boy athlete of the year 2014. He was pushed hard by Dicken Tilly-Loughrey in 2nd in 11mins 21 secs and to complete the clean sweep for Bourton, Toby Sellek took 3rd spot in 11mins 29secs. George Farley is gaining strength and confidence as his experience grows race by race with an excellent 5th today in 12mins 48secs.

In the Under 10 Boys race George Quli took his first race win today in style in 10mins 35secs and 4th overall in the whole race, great performance. Arthur Fletcher ran with great determination today as he ran through the field well to take 2nd spot in 11mins 15secs.

We had yet another race wins in the under 9 boy’s race for Sean Farley in a very confident run and he finished ahead of many older boys in 11 mins 50secs.

In the Under 8 boys race they was a very good podium finish for Peter Fletcher in 3rd in a very close race with only a few seconds between the top 3 as he finished in 12mins 37secs.

The Under 7 boys also had a good battle with Charlie Aster taking the top honours in 12mins 21 secs but he was pushed very hard by a very determined Arthur Quli in 2nd spot in 12mins 33secs.

In the girls race Koumi Ikeda took the lead from the gun and dominated the race in a fine front run performance to take the top spot in 10mins 25secs. Emily Field is having a very good season as all the hard work is now paying dividends in a fine 2nd today in 11mins 4secs. She was well chased by Lauren Farley in 3rd spot in 11mins 7secs another good 1, 2, 3 for Bourton. Gaby Jones is coming back into form with a solid 4th today in 11mins 17secs. Ellie Edgerton had a fine run today in 5th in 12mins 21 secs.

In the Under 11 girls race Isobel Barnett led the way with a fine win in 11mins 26secs to take the top spot. She was well supported by the ever improving Darcy Thompson in 3rd in 12mins 58secs.

The Under 10 girls also did very well with Isabel Dennett taking her first race in style in 13mins 7secs with Ella Lane-Gregory pushing her hard in a very good 3rd in 13mins 41secs.

What a fine run Abigail Barnett had to take the Under 9 title in 12mins 1 secs beating many girls older than her. Annabella Williams once again showed how much natural talent she has by a fine 2nd today in 12mins 31secs. Rosabella Edgerton battled round very well to take 4th in 13mins 54secs. To finish a great day for Bourton Juniors Trilly Sellek won the Under 8 girls race in a fine 13mins 17secs.

Other News for May 2015.

Christopher Hunt took part in the Blenheim 7k Fun Run managing an very good 71st place and 14th U15 Boy despite being only 10 years old.

Gloucestershire AAA Track & Field Championships 2015.
Prince of Wales Stadium, Cheltenham. Saturday 18th May 2015.

Despite the event coinciding with the start of the half term holidays, 18 members represented the club at the Gloucester AAA’s Track and Field Championships at the Prince of Wales Stadium in Cheltenham on the 18th May. The U11’s ran 600 metres and the older age groups ran 1500 metres. As this was a qualifying event in the club Race Champ Table, all members that competed for the club, were awarded 2 points. It was extremely impressive that all who all ran, managed their quickest times, this year.

Isobel Dennett was our sole runner in the U11’s, girls completion with a very respectable 8th place in 2 minutes 20 seconds, taking a massive 18 seconds off her personal best at this distance.

The U11’s boys race was run in two heats with positions decided on times. Joseph Davidson was first runner home in an excellent 4th place in 1 minute 59 seconds taking an impressive 11 seconds off his PB. Beau Griffin was close behind in 2 minutes with Will Tallis finishing in 5th place in 2 minutes 10 seconds, 8 seconds quicker than in the same event last year. Toby Sellek came 6th (2 .11), George Farley, 8th (2.18), Sean Farley 9th (2.23) and Edward Jones, 10th (2.30). Gloucestershire Cross Country Championships
Coleford.- Saturday 3rd January 2015.

The Gloucestershire AAA Cross Country Championships took place on Jan. 3rd at the Five Acres College in Coleford. The conditions were very demanding after all the recent rain made the fields and woods very muddy and energy sapping. There were also some very
testing hills and the weather was damp, very cold and foggy a proper cross country day. There were some excellent individual and team performances. They all showed real determination and character on a very tough day.

New to this age category (Under 15) Niamh Powell completely dominated her age category taking the championship with a very powerful and determined run, they also run with the under 17’s and she beat all of them apart from one who runs for England. Rosanna Mutsaars is now racing very well again as she seems to glide over the mud, she makes it look so easy with a very good 4th today. She was pushed hard by Koumi Ikeda who has a completely different style, she powers through the mud very effectively to finish 5th. These three won the team gold prize. They were well backed up by Charlotte Foster who is improving week by week in 14th and Gaby Jones who is returning after illness in a fine 15th.

Bethan Powell just behind was locked in her own battle for 3rd with position changes for the whole race, in the finishing straight she just lost out by a vest width to take 4th. Josephine Mutsaars was just of the lead group after the first lap but she steadily pulled herself up the field with her flowing style, she finished a very good 7th today. These three won the team silver medal prize. Emily Field is growing in confidence with every race with a very good 13th today and Isabel Kiey - Thomas had a good solid run today in the tough conditions in 16th.
